What Sparked the Boycott Campaign?

The backlash began shortly after the tour flier was released online. Many Nigerian social media users called for a boycott of the concert, citing rising diplomatic tensions and renewed reports of xenophobic harassment targeting Nigerians in South Africa.

The debate intensified further due to high-profile commentary:

• Public Figures Speak Out: On-Air Personality Do2dtun and popular content creator Solomon Buchi publicly questioned the event's promoters, describing the boycott as a necessary stand against the treatment of Nigerians in South Africa.

• VeryDarkMan’s Threat: Social critic Martins Otse, widely known as VeryDarkMan, threatened to mobilize members of his "Ratel Movement" to halt the event if it proceeded.

• Chidimma Adetshina Controversy: Much of the online anger also referenced the ongoing deportation proceedings in South Africa involving former Miss Universe Nigeria, Chidimma Adetshina.

The Division: Should Artists Be Blamed?

The boycott movement split Nigerian social media into opposing camps:
On one hand, human rights activist and 2027 presidential candidate for the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, urged fans not to hold the singer responsible for political conflicts. Writing on X (formerly Twitter), Sowore stated:

     "Nigerians should direct their anger at their real enemies... No one should hold a talented musician like @Tyllaaaaaaa vicariously liable for the crimes of xenophobia. Tyla's Lagos concert must go on."

However, critics pushed back, arguing that Tyla's silence on xenophobic incidents in her home country made hosting a lucrative commercial show in Lagos inappropriate at this time.
