The Enugu State Police Command has ordered a thorough investigation into the death of Izuchukwu Nnaji, popularly known as Stone, following a fatal shooting during a police operation at Bull Hotel in Asata, Enugu.
The incident has sparked public outrage, with youths reportedly taking to the streets to demand justice and accountability over the circumstances surrounding his death.
In a press release dated October 23, the police confirmed that Nnaji sustained gunshot injuries during an operation conducted by operatives of the Anti-Cultism Section of the Violent Crime Response Unit.

What Happened at Bull Hotel?
According to the Enugu State Police Command, operatives conducted an intelligence-led operation at Bull Hotel, Asata, following information concerning a man identified as Nworie Chidera Kelvin, popularly known as Akidi.
The police described Akidi as an alleged drug dealer and member of the Vikings Confraternity. The command also claimed that he had links to cases involving cultism and unlawful possession of firearms.
The operation reportedly resulted in the arrest of Akidi and nine other suspects, comprising men and women between the ages of 17 and 28.
Police said officers recovered quantities of dried plant material suspected to be cannabis, a weighing scale believed to have been used to measure illicit drugs, and ₦43,400 in cash.
These claims remain allegations and should not be treated as proof of guilt till it been confirm.
Police Explain How the Fatal Shooting Occurred
In its official statement, the police said Nnaji and another suspect allegedly jumped through a window while attempting to escape during the operation.
According to the command, an officer pursuing the two men was confronted, and they allegedly attempted to disarm him.
The police said the officer's firearm discharged during the ensuing struggle, leaving Nnaji with gunshot injuries. He was reportedly taken to a hospital, where he was later confirmed dead.
The other suspect allegedly escaped.
The command added that Nnaji's remains had been deposited in a mortuary pending an autopsy.
These details represent the police account of the incident. The investigation is expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
Family Disputes Allegations as Youths Demand Justice
The controversy surrounding Nnaji's death extends beyond the police statement.
According to reports by PREMIUM TIMES and Punch, youths protested in Enugu following the discovery of his body at a hospital mortuary.
The protesters reportedly demanded justice and called for a thorough investigation into the circumstances of his death.
Nnaji's elder brother, Ogochukwu Nnaji, also disputed the suggestion that his brother was involved in criminal activities. He alleged that police operatives took his brother away from the hotel and that the family later traced his body to the mortuary.
The family has called for accountability over the incident.
The conflicting accounts make it particularly important for investigators to establish a reliable timeline of events, examine available evidence and determine what happened before, during and after the operation.
Police Commissioner Orders Investigation
Following the incident, Enugu State Commissioner of Police CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa directed the Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Intelligence Department to investigate the circumstances surrounding Nnaji's death.
The investigation is expected to determine whether the operation and the discharge of the firearm complied with established police procedures and applicable laws.
CP Giwa appealed to the deceased's family, associates and other concerned persons to remain calm while the investigation proceeds.
He also assured the public that any officer found culpable would face appropriate disciplinary action.
Questions the Investigation Must Answer
The investigation will be important in addressing several questions surrounding the incident:
- What exactly happened during the operation at Bull Hotel?
- What evidence supports the different accounts of how Nnaji sustained his injuries?
- Did the officers involved comply with the applicable rules governing the use of firearms?
- What conclusions will emerge from the investigation and autopsy?
These questions cannot be conclusively answered from the police statement alone.
A credible investigation should establish the facts, address the concerns raised by the family and public, and make its findings available through appropriate official channels.
Why Accountability Matters
Police operations play an important role in preventing crime and protecting communities. However, the circumstances surrounding a fatal shooting during an operation must also be examined carefully.
A transparent investigation can help establish responsibility, address legitimate public concerns and strengthen confidence in law enforcement.
For the family of Izuchukwu Nnaji, the immediate concern is understanding the circumstances that led to his death and whether anyone should be held accountable.
