Emergency Flood Alert Issued for 17 Nigerian States: The Federal Government has issued an emergency flood alert for 17 states across Nigeria, warning residents to prepare for possible flooding as heavy rainfall is expected in the coming days.

The warning follows weather forecasts indicating that several communities may experience intense rainfall capable of causing flash floods, overflowing rivers, and damage to homes, roads, and farmlands.

According to NIHSA Director-General Umar Mohammed, 16 key hydrological monitoring stations—including Saminaka on the Karam River, the Waya Dam Site, and the Amber River—have officially surpassed critical warning thresholds.

State governments, emergency responders, and residents in low-lying floodplains are urged to take immediate precautions or evacuate vulnerable areas.

States Affected by the Flood Alert

The states listed in the latest flood advisory include:

Abia
Adamawa
Akwa Ibom
Anambra
Bauchi
Bayelsa
Benue
Cross River
Delta
Edo
Imo
Kogi
Kwara
Nasarawa
Niger
Plateau

Residents in these states are advised to remain alert and closely monitor updates from emergency management agencies.

States Facing Highest Exposure

•  Bauchi State: Tops the risk profile, with an estimated 1,841 communities, 145 schools, 101 health facilities, and 8 local markets flagged as highly vulnerable.

•  Edo State: 148 communities, 131 schools, 123 health facilities, and 7 hectares of active farmland are under direct flood threat.

•  Imo State: Over 415 communities and critical public infrastructure have been placed on high alert.

What Residents Should Do

Authorities have urged Nigerians living in flood-prone communities to take precautionary measures, including:

        • Move to higher ground if flooding begins.
        • Avoid walking or driving through flooded              roads.
        • Clear drainage systems around homes.
        • Keep emergency items such as food,                  drinking water, medications, flashlights,               and important documents in waterproof             containers.
         • Follow official weather forecasts and                   emergency advisories.

Possible Impact Flooding can lead to:

• Loss of lives and property.
• Damage to roads, bridges, and public                   infrastructure.
• Destruction of farms and crops.
• Displacement of families and communities.
•  Increased risk of waterborne diseases such       as cholera and typhoid.
